Portland,Oregon is as weird as the tv show. That about sums it all up. We took a train ride on the Amtrak Cascades on 4/19/2014.
We arrived early Saturday morning at the station in Tacoma.
Traveling light... everything we need for 3 people is in that backpack!
Just waiting to get on...here's the train now!
apparently some people don't listen...
That's me staring out the window at all the christmas trees...
Spencer just put his headphones on...
This might be Mt St. Helens??
Time for a nap...
lol, he needs his energy for his adventure...
the conductor came around and punched our ticket...
here's a view of the whole car...some seats face forward and some backwards...
We finally arrived at Union Station!
It's a lovely large historic station!
more pics to follow in part 2
We're afoot in this place, like many that live here...
Restaurants everywhere...Time for lunch at Deschutes Brewery in the Pearl District...
Steve ordered a bison burger and a craft beer sampler...
They even brew their own root beer!
Spencer said it was really good!
This is their special appetizer that everyone raves about...its a pretzel with alfredo cheese dip and a jalapeno pesto...I'd rather have chips and green sauce, lol!
Time to walk off that lunch..here's Powell's Bookstore!
The largest bookstore I have ever seen...
Now is the time to search for our fav books, I'm sure they have it or can find it!
we really enjoyed just browsing this place!
It's time to check into our hotel at the Marriott Courtyard City Center!
5th floor with an amazing view of the city
but I need a nap before anymore sightseeing today...
Now that our batteries are recharged we're ready to hit the pavement!
Here's Chinatown...
it's rough as the day is long...
voodoo donuts has a 2 hour wait...we will be back in the AM...

Car2go...

very interesting... these are everywhere!
OK, so now we are having dinner at a haunted pizza place that has a brewery???
so weird...
http://www.oldtownpizza.com/
It has a seedy history of being a brothel in a hotel that shanghaied sailors...
and it's now haunted...really???
Spencer thought the pepperoni pizza was good...
We boxed up the leftovers and he gave it to some homeless kid soon after as we were walking back to our hotel.
Something we rarely see in Texas...payphones everywhere we turn...
Let's head back to the Pearl District and find the Streetcars!
http://www.trimet.org/streetcar/index.htm
Let's get on!
So, there's lots of public transportation available...I think they have 5 types.
It's a good experience for us!
These are new and really nice.
It made a big loop around town and we saw a good part of the downtown district!
wonderful end to our day...
Portlandia Day 2 tomorrow!!
